Karnala is situated in Nortwest of Navi Mumbai zone. Karnala is a Bird sanctuary which hold the tomb of Karnala & fort walls surrounding it at a altitude of 1450 feets. The fort top resembles 'Thumbs Up' sign due to its shape. The fort is believed to be built between 13th - 14th Century & has been under control of Yadavs, Tughlaqs, Gujrat Sultante, Portuguese & lastly of Shivaji Maharaj.
The plan was made a day earlier by my Trekmate Ajay Mhatre with his team, who invited me to join in. It was 30th July 2017 (sunday), monsoon was hitting hard those few days but took a calm on that day. I started my ride from Badlapur towards Karnala (58 Kms) at 9 am & reached Karnala Base at 10 am. There by I met Ajay Mhatre & his buddies Ravi, Parag, Hemant & Rupesh. We entered into the gates of sanctuary, parked our bikes & at 10:30 am, we initiated the walk. The path meets a spot developed area holding some cages in which there are few of the birds preserved, to be frank, they are just showcased by keeping them in cages. The path from here onwards takes a rough swing. The surrounded jungle isnt much dense. The walking route is very clear, but very crowded.
The trek proceeds trough a jungle walk & hike which brigs you on a mid level mountain at a spot named 'Ticketghar', taking a right turn from here, we have to walk, climb muddy patches entangled with thick roots of trees. Crossing two such mountains, walking for one hour from the base, we reach a table land getting a view of Karnala fort, bastions, fort wall, & people climbing from sides of walls. As per my observations, most of the visitors take this as a last point & spot proceeding further. But the adventurous & trekking visitors continue proceeding. The fort wall starts & rock steps began, railings give a support but makes it less adventurous. Climbing such 3 reps & passing though inside bastion steps, we reached the fort top. In our front stands the Huge Karnala Tower. The Rock is itself such a massive natural creation that one should definately bow down to Mother Nature. Moving further from the side of the Rock Tower, we pass by some water tanksbuilt inside the rocks. Going on further, we reach the back side of the fort, end of the fort walls. It took us around two hours to reach till here. Fog was the additive to the beauty in our captures. We took a leisure time of half hour at the location.
It was nearly 1 pm & we started our returning walk. It took us 1 hour 15 mins to reach the base at the parking lot.
The overall trek was a great experience, it is a medium level trek & easy to proceed. Wet climate can cause the muddy patches much dangerous, herein your preventive as well as protective measures are usefull.
My Kind request to all those visiting such places, is to carry ownself in a proper protective oufits & not trekking but atleast shoes with proper grips & protection. Observations says that many people attempt the treks & adventure activity in a trendy way, which can cause you harm. Meet you soon with a new write up & new experiences. Till then, Be safe & enjoy nature to its fullest !!
